The Biggest Current Concern for Western Australian Directors and CEOs

March 3, 2016

Blog Topic

Right now in Western Australia the biggest concern appears to be revenue, according to the feedback I’m getting from my CEO clients.

Sales are significantly down. There’s a scarcity of new work.

Contractors are being asked to cut costs. Suppliers are being squeezed. There’s a domino effect occurring.

Frantic searching for revenue and cost cutting is now the norm.

Executives are super stressed and working super hard.

There’s a struggle for survival.

Does this really work?

The biggest loss of energy (including money) is caused by the non-alignment of senior leaders, including directors and senior executives.

It is impossible to think clearly when in survival mode.

For instance, stopping all marketing and training /development; allowing vacancies across the business to remain empty; asking more of those who may not be able; harassing stressed clients and suppliers; bowing to opinionated commentators scared of bonus losses – the list can go on.

This is the result of stressed thinking.

Let’s step back for a moment. Did we not learn from the GFC in 2008?

In nature, and we are part of nature, there is contraction and even dormancy. It’s normal.

We have created an artificial environment where there is an unrealistic expectation (borne of greed or fear or selfish agenda) that there must be uninterrupted growth.

That’s what cancer is. It kills the host.

In nature we have the circle of life. It’s not just a Disney idea. It’s real.

If you don’t get that or wish to pursue continuous graph driven growth, good luck!

Now let’s get real.

Become calm and centred so that you can think effectively. Do you really know how to do that?

Get your leadership on the same page, singing the same sensible song, for that is where your current wastage really stems from. Do you know how to do that?

Plan for both right now and the near future. Things will change – will you be ready or depleted?

Keep investing energy wisely, with realistic and useful objectives.

Engage with accountable help that delivers measurable forward thinking value.

You can access the right help without risking your constrained budget, if you know how.

This is not the time to be driven by fear, habit or ignorance, but by courage, better practice and continuous learning.

Lose your ego (it’s made from fear) and ask for help, because the right help is there in abundance – if you can think clearly, ask the right questions and make sound judgement.

Stop listening to the opinionated media, analysts and shareholders – they are fearful, ignorant and their loyalty is questionable. They are not the experts in your business – you are.

What will you do?
