The Central Beliefs of Really Effective Leaders

August 4, 2015

Blog Topic

The diversity of effective leadership styles and their personalities is immense, ranging from the visionary humble and beloved leader to the feared dynamic controlling leader who gets people through crisis after crisis.

The latter styles tend to be short-lived and fit for purpose. Whilst they get us through as crisis, they are damaging otherwise.

What sets effective all-rounder leaders apart from the less flexible are their central beliefs.

Here are the central beliefs of really effective leaders:

  • I am here to help our people be great in achieving our vision through following our values.
  • Everyone is an individual with capabilities and I must empower them to use their capabilities effectively.
  • There are only three causes of all human performance issues and conflicts – fear, habits and ignorance.
  • The three remedies of those causes which are also the cause of excellence are courage, better practice and continuous learning.
  • To get the best movement forward I must use both an appreciative inquiry and a pathological inquiry, knowing that, in the main, step changes comes from the appreciative and incremental improvement come through the pathological.
  • Change is continuous and becoming more disruptive and I must help us to become more skilled in adapting.
  • Our attitudinal competence is the best pathway for adapting and excelling.
  • I am continuously and consciously learning and my self-development is central to my capacity to be a better leader.
  • I must earn the trust and respect of our people through my consistent care and competence.
  • I own up to my mistakes as soon as possible.
  • I must observe, notice, listen and ask far more than assume and tell.
  • I prefer to be respected rather than be popular.
