Following my earlier blog on core leadership beliefs, here is an expanded list of beliefs I believe to be crucial for sustainable effective leadership.
It’s a long list and that is the challenge for effective leaders.
- I believe in our values and our vision.
- I believe our values are our rules of engagement in our purpose.
- I believe in our ability to achieve the vision.
- I believe I must be a very effective communicator.
- I believe all our people must clearly understand and agree with our values, vision and purpose.
- I believe our values, vision purpose and people are more important than I am.
- I believe I must earn the trust and respect I desire, without relying on popularity or authority.
- I believe our people need to be appreciated and respected.
- I believe our people will be as engaged as much as I am engaged with them and our purpose.
- I believe that there is no “one size fits all”, and that we are all individuals.
- I believe we can be sustainably high performing without burnout.
- I believe I must model the behaviour and performance I seek from us.
- I believe I can always improve my leadership.
- I believe I am most effective when I am calm and centred.
- I believe that in order to improve our performance we must develop ourselves accordingly.
- I believe I can effectively deal with unacceptable behaviour and performance whilst keeping trust and respect.
- I believe that the core causes of all that doesn’t work with us are only fear, habits and ignorance.
- I believe that the remedies for what doesn’t work and the causes of higher performance are only courage, better practice and continuous learning.
- I believe that bureaucracy must be optimised.
- I believe we must all be continuously learning and adapting.
- I believe I am responsible and accountable for our culture and outcomes.
- I believe that our outcomes are in direct proportion to our collaborative engagement performance and innovation.
- I believe we must have a working succession plan.
- I believe we can measure everything.
- I believe we can be a desirable model for others.
What do you think? What’s missing?
