Recently I have worked with a variety of clients who each asked me to help their people through difficult situations such as redundancy and re-deployment and other disruptive changes, as well as dealing with difficult people and relationships.
I investigated each client’s culture and situation and came up with six statements that actually applied to them all. I then spent the appropriate time for and with each group, leaving them competent and confident in dealing with the situations and people they faced.
Here are the six statements:
- Become calm and centred, even in uncertainty, complexity and volatility.
- Seek the opportunities and benefits of change.
- Mend broken relationships, don’t hold the status quo.
- Stay respectful and attentive to all, even the angry and frustrated.
- Hold professional discussions, not emotional arguments and consider others’ opinion before responding calmly.
- Communicate, cooperate and collaborate with each other.
These statements and their application deal with most of the situations and people we are likely to encounter.
