It seems the world is in turmoil with uncertainty of global political stability; accelerating technological change; commoditisation of services; loss of trust in the validity of information from and through the media and the growing impact of climate change.
2017 is shaping up to be a very interesting time, though not without hope and the opportunity to do well, regardless of where one is.
A CEO of any size organisation, in any location, to be best prepared, could attend immediately to the following:
- Get clear about the organisation’s current values, vision and mission and make sure everyone in the organisation has the same clarity. That means the CEO is accountable for the values, vision and mission being effectively continuously communicated to all staff.
- Ensure that the leadership team is fully aligned and modelling the values, able to explain the vision and mission with uniform accuracy – so that their staff are all pulling in the same direction instead of pulling against each other.
- Ensure everyone has clarity of their roles and how it relates to the vision and mission.
- Ensure that everyone has clear and useful key results areas that align with the values, vision and mission.
- Ensure that the strategic plan has been effectively converted to a doable action plan and is being executed accordingly.
- Ensure that everyone accepts the reality that everything is changing rapidly and we must disrupt ourselves first to choose the best way forward. They must be prepared to pivot and renew plans at any time.
The last point will be the greatest challenge for everyone.
We need great leadership now more than ever.
