Keeping Innovation Simple

December 3, 2013

Blog Topic

The drive for higher performance, productivity and sustainability inevitably raises the topic of innovation.

I assert that innovation like many other concepts has been made complicated in an effort for the authors to be heard, to help and to stand out.

Let's keep it simple for once.

Just keep these core principles in mind, experiment, record review and improve.

  • Innovation is done by people who care about what they are doing.
  • Innovation is a mix of learning, using, improving and creating.
  • The best source of inspiration comes from the users, or customers, of the product or service. Harness them effectively and half your job is done.
  • We are limited by our beliefs and a sub-conscious desire for the status quo. That prevents innovation.
  • Innovation is risky, so get over it.
  • Learn how to fail fast and regroup.
  • Establish the discipline of recording and reviewing. It will save you time and money.

How you apply these principles depends upon you and your organisation's culture.

How would you proceed? Are there any other thoughts that are useful for keeping it simple?
