The purpose of values is to define how and why we think, say, do and be regarding everything, in order to be true to ourselves and be valued authentically by others.
Are you sick of hearing the “values drum” being beaten yet the drummers seem to be marching to a different beat?
How quickly are we willing to rationalise away our values for the sake of a material or fleeting gain?
How quickly will we compromise one value ahead of another, when we promised to find a way to honour them all?
In the end, all we have is our honour. And our honour is measured by our adherence to our values.
When sufficient members of a community or organisation become tired of the dishonour they will respond and remove the threat.
I assert that the only causes of values breaches are fear, habits and ignorance. Their remedy is courage, practice of better habits and lifelong learning.
Show me the leader in breach of values and I’ll see fear, habits and arrogant ignorance.
What’s been your experience?
