Your Four Crucial Traits to be an Effective Supervisor

Marc slammed shut the door to his office.  He was fuming.

Phil, one of his senior team members, had just made a mess of an easy task he’d done many times before without a problem.

When Marc pulled him up on it, Phil’s response made him even more angry.

“Marc, we’re all sick of the way you carry on when things don’t go as planned” Phil said.  “We all make mistakes sometimes and that’s no reason to lose your temper like that.  Keep that up and you’ll have no team.”

When Marc had quietened down, he reflected on what had happened and more usefully, how often this situation was happening.

Too often.

Marc realised he needed help.

  • He knew he lost his temper too easily.
  • He knew his attempts to improve team performance weren’t working.
  • He knew he couldn’t handle being challenged without making matters worse.
  • He knew there was a gap between what he expected of his team and what they delivered.

Marc spent some time searching for solutions.

He needed to pick up these skills quickly and cost effectively.

He went to his supervisor, Andrew, and explained what he wanted.

Andrew enrolled him with Andrew’s coach, who happened to be running a one-day program on just those topics.

Initially Marc didn’t think a one-day program could deal with all that he wanted.

But once he began, he realised the coach was an experienced and very engaging trainer and had designed the program so that Marc was able to use the four skills immediately in the workplace and make rapid improvement and get rapid results.

He also had access to the coach whilst practising his new skills.

Within two months everything had turned around for Marc. He had begun to re-earn the trust and respect of his team and their performance continued to improve.

Six months down the track Marc reflected, as he now did regularly, and a smile stretched across his face as he pondered those four traits he was now mastering:

  1. How to remain calm and centred no matter what is happening.
  2. How to delegate and debrief for effective performance and productivity.
  3. How to deal with any challenge, whether people or situations.
  4. How to coach for no gap between strategy, tactics and results.

Marc had also developed a strong working relationship with the coach/trainer and was grateful he had that contact for his future development as a leader.

How valuable do you think that is, not only for front line supervisors, but also for senior leaders?
