These steps are inexpensive and you’ll get a massive return on investment.
Step 1 – Listen to your people twice as much as you do now. Learn what they think and feel - really.
Step 2 – Ask empowering respectful questions of your people twice as much as you do now – for example “How did you make that work so well?” “How can we transfer the learning from this success to this area of our work?” “What worked for you in this project?” “What would you like to do differently next time?”
Step 3 – Stop solving your people’s problems for them – instead ask them what they would do if there was no possibility of failure. Let them know that the new rule is “Come to me with a problem and your suggestions to resolve it.”
What happens when you learn more about your people?
What happens when you ask empowering questions?
What happens when your people think about their challenges with the aim of resolving them?
Make those three steps your and their habit and the collective value of you and your people will at least double.
What do you think?
