Six Tips for Hiring Great People

December 3, 2015

Blog Topic

Now that the mining boom is over, it’s presently an employers’ market.

That means there are many more people looking for work than there are positions available.

Whilst that may seem great for employers, it is actually a double-edged sword. With so many more to choose from, how will you know you’ve hired the best?

Here’s my tips (I am an executive selector and coach):

  • Be very thorough in your selection process, particularly the short list interviews and background research.
  • Don’t trust referees entirely – they are friends of the candidate. Check with people not mentioned.
  • Be very clear and certain about the position’s detailed job description and what is expected in the first three months.
  • Onboard the successful candidate with care and thoroughness – not doing it properly is most often the primary cause of failure.
  • Don’t forget to search for people leaving the military – they are trained team players, have a proven work ethic and a host of other valuable skills, experience and training that make them highly desirable loyal employees – provided you are a thoughtful competent and effective leader.
  • For best results use an evidence based trusted selection agency who can advise and help on all the points above.
