The Retired Leader’s Lament

February 16, 2016

Blog Topic

They made me an offer I couldn’t refuse

To make the change that would save the firm

Become a shareholder’s darling

I slashed our costs, cut the workforce

Changed this and that

Drove the team to breaking point

Replaced them when they fell

Still we floundered though I knew not why

Then the board said Go you’ve served us well

But it’s not working out.

I felt angry and worthless, just for a while

On reflection I justified my decisions

Gained new strength

Began anew

I slashed our costs, cut the workforce

Changed this and that

Drove the team to breaking point

Replaced them when they fell

Still we floundered, still I knew not why

And the board said Go you’ve served us well

But it’s not working out.

I’m old and broken

My hair and health is gone

I recall the days when the battles raged and I was in control

Then my son asked me

Dad what’s your legacy?

I said Son, we did this and that and all were delighted

Until something changed and I’ll never know why.

Then my son said

Dad, it’s difference between leadership and management

You confused them.
