WIFM = What’s In it for Me
IHFU = I’m Here For Us
We are indoctrinated about the merit of considering ‘WIFM’ when we influence others. “Always be aware that people need to know about what’s in it for them.”
That may be fine for marketers considering how to reach their market.
But what happens when leaders take WIFM personally?
I assert that when that happens we head downhill rapidly.
Effective leaders are not there for themselves, they are there for us all.
That’s what makes them effective leaders.
The WIFM leaders leave a mess, lost opportunities, moribund organisations and burnt talent.
I don’t need to spell it out for you, you’ve already experienced both.
Support the genuine IAHFU leader and confront the WIFM leader. Be courageous and respectful.
You can be both.
Leadership is not about marketing.
It’s about serving others.
What do you think?
