Are Your Leaders Just Zoo Keepers?

October 6, 2015

Blog Topic

Massive and disruptive change is upon the way we do business, the way we work, the way we govern, and the way we live.

That calls for leadership that can execute on these main criteria:

  • Do we have meaningful and lived values that guide how and what we think, say and do?
  • Do we have a compelling vision for our future that expresses our values?
  • Do we have the right people in the right places right now?
  • Is our culture one of learning, adaptability and collaboration?
  • Do we have systems, processes and measures that can be easily adjusted?
  • Are we being creative and innovative about how we add value to our stakeholders and the broader community?

Or is your leadership doing this:

  • keeping the ‘elephants in the room’ and the ‘sacred cows’
  • ‘flogging a dead horse’
  • milking a ‘cash cow’ without regard for its future
  • rejoicing at a ‘dead cat bounce’
  • putting lipstick on a pig
  • nurturing red herrings
  • breeding scapegoats

If you accuse your leaders of zoo keeping, that means that you are being an animal in a zoo.

Do you have the courage the better practice and the learning to alleviate the situation or will you stay in your cage?

If you are a leader who has the wisdom and courage to recognise that zoo keeping is consuming most of the leadership’s energy, what will you do about it?

Please share your thoughts.
