Whether you know it or not, your business is headed for disruption, either from the outside or better still, from the inside.
Here’s what you can do right now to make disruption work for the business:
- Get absolute clarity about the one thing your business offers the market, that no one else can or does. This act of choosing the one thing that your business is best at and of real value to the market is what will set you apart and free you to focus on it. If it happens to be another Coke-a-Cola or Rolex look alike, you’re screwed. It must be a real difference.
- Never choose the wrong person again. The vast experience from successful business builders all point to the importance of selection and hiring the right people for the right role for the right time, the first time. Better to keep the position open for a while longer, rather than to put in the wrong person. By the way, Gallup says 82% of managers are the wrong fit.
- Deploy Your current staff to roles best suited to them. If you wish to keep your talented people, make sure they are in roles that suit them, suit the business and offer opportunity to both.
- Adjust your business model. Disruption attacks business models. The value chains that make up your business model are vulnerable to this disruption, especially if they are traditional or have been in place for a long time without review or renewal. With your brilliant people examine the model closely and adjust accordingly.
- Create a development plan for everybody in the business. You’ll never develop the business unless you develop the people who make the business happen. Everyone has an important role, otherwise they wouldn’t be there, would they? They need to be developed to develop the business.
There are many more things you can do, however these five are crucial, relatively inexpensive and well within your capacity to do now.
