We are experiencing evolutionary times. The rate of change is noticeably accelerating.
Disruptive change is upon us. Technology, aging, population pressures, climate change, societal upheaval – they are all part of the picture.
Leading others in these times, whether the family, community or corporate requires a set of skills that differ from the old ways.
Here is a list of skills I believe is essential for leaders in these times:
- Attitudinal Competence – the skill to choose one’s best attitudes for what has happened, is happening or might happen, and not be subject to habitual attitudes, resulting in mental strength, suppleness and stamina.
- Exceptional communication skills – particularly those of listening, asking and persuasion and explaining.
- Engagement skills – beyond communication, this skill is about connecting authentically with others, particularly those disconnected by technology and space.
- Learning skills – supported by a voracious curiosity.
- Organisational skills – the ability to conceptualise new and better ways of organising people, projects and structures that are agile and effective.
There is still as big a need for the qualities of Values, Envisioning and Caring.
