The 5 Top Skills of the 21st Century Leader

October 1, 2015

Blog Topic

We are experiencing evolutionary times. The rate of change is noticeably accelerating.

Disruptive change is upon us. Technology, aging, population pressures, climate change, societal upheaval – they are all part of the picture.

Leading others in these times, whether the family, community or corporate requires a set of skills that differ from the old ways.

Here is a list of skills I believe is essential for leaders in these times:

  • Attitudinal Competence – the skill to choose one’s best attitudes for what has happened, is happening or might happen, and not be subject to habitual attitudes, resulting in mental strength, suppleness and stamina.
  • Exceptional communication skills – particularly those of listening, asking and persuasion and explaining.
  • Engagement skills – beyond communication, this skill is about connecting authentically with others, particularly those disconnected by technology and space.
  • Learning skills – supported by a voracious curiosity.
  • Organisational skills – the ability to conceptualise new and better ways of organising people, projects and structures that are agile and effective.

There is still as big a need for the qualities of Values, Envisioning and Caring.
