There’s an epidemic in our workplace that is spilling over to our personal lives – perhaps even spilling from our personal lives into the workplace.
It’s been nurtured by social media, marketing and worst of all by some leaders.
The symptoms are ‘selfies’, mindless Twittering, collecting ‘likes’ and ‘friends’, allowing one’s self to be upset by text, advertising suggesting that it’s all about you, and leaders who set an example of it being all about themselves.
The ‘cotton wool’ mentality of making everything ‘safe’ and politically correct, supporting people who are upset by other’s mere words even when it’s not directed at them, these too are nurturing the epidemic.
We are suffering from narcissism.
It’s sucking our collective energy, diminishing collaboration and damaging innovation and productivity.
We are becoming soft and selfish.
We lack the leaders who can effectively yet respectfully confront us with these truths.
We lack effective leaders.
What do you think?
