In Australia at the moment there is a hullabaloo about politicians of all persuasions abusing tax-payer funded expenses and entitlements.
They are all crying ‘We are within the rules”.
At first they were taking pot-shots at each other across the major parties.
Then it was revealed that members of both major parties had been dipping into the funds beyond what were ‘community expectations’ which I take to mean commonsense values.
That’s when they closed ranks and shared the common cry.
Regardless of my suspicion of a media beat up, the true purpose of which I’m ignorant, it reveals that there is a gap between the rules and our values.
Then I am reminded of the saying ‘Rules are for fools and the guidance of the wise’.
It’s clear to me that our politicians have admitted to being fools – all of them.
