What Effective Leaders Do Well

March 17, 2015

Blog Topic

Committed leaders are continuously learning, seeking to hone their skills as effective leaders.

The best of them do the following really well:

Listen – they know that listening carefully, to ensure they understand what’s actually being said, is key to engaging effectively with their people.

Notice – they observe carefully with full attention to what’s happening, to what has happened, to see what others might be missing.

Ask – they seek clarity and understanding by asking, not assuming. They know that asking is a key action in engaging with their people.

Reflect – they are routinely reflecting on their thoughts and actions, as well as the actions of others – to learn and improve upon past outcomes.

Mediocre leaders most often do the opposite:

They are thinking about what to say next instead of listening to fully understand.

They see only that which strikes their corrective eye, instead of what’s working and anything else that might matter or be useful.

They tell – thinking they already know everything they need to know, or are seeking to get quick action.

They don’t reflect – they are arrogant in the comfort of their assumed knowledge.

What do you think?
