Barry was walking around the large office space. As CEO it was his habit to ‘walk the floor’ regularly.
He stopped at Sharyn’s desk because he noticed the glum look on her face.
“Hi Sharyn, everything OK?’ he asked.
Sharyn looked up with a tight smile “Hi Barry, yes all good.”
Barry could see it wasn’t all good.
“Come and have a coffee with me, I want to have a chat about a few great things I’ve seen you do recently” Barry said.
At coffee Barry acknowledged some activities Sharyn had executed well recently and clarified how important they were to their mission and goals.
When he saw that Sharyn had perked up, he asked what she had been glum about earlier.
It turned out she’d been worrying about some bills that were urgent. Her son was having medical treatment and it was draining the family’s resources.
Barry asked Sharyn to think about three different ways Sharyn could resolve the problem.
Sharyn thought about it and then came up with three possible solutions.
Barry then asked her to choose the one that seemed most realistic and doable.
Sharyn made a choice.
Barry said, “Good choice, when will you action it?”
“Today!” Sharyn said with a smile.
Barry had given Sharyn the gift available to us all, the one we rarely use.
That gift is our ability to think effectively to resolve everything and achieve anything.
Thinking effectively, no matter what’s occurring, requires Attitudinal Competence.
Attitudinal Competence is available to us all, provided we tap into it.
Whilst we can all choose to become Attitudinally Competent ourselves, the leader who knows it will enhance the people and thus the organisation is not only wise, but caring, when Attitudinal Competence is proactively deployed.
