Gary and his team-mate Claire were told bluntly by their supervisor “Your job is being made redundant within six months. They’ve got technology and artificial intelligence that can do it now.”

Gary, single and debt-free, went into a panic.

“It’s going to take ages to get another job.  If they’re bringing in AI for this job, they’ll do the same elsewhere.  I’ll be stuffed.  I’ll be back in debt.  What should I do?” he blurted out to Claire.

Claire, married, two children with a stay-at-home husband, had a different response.

Firstly, Claire listened to Gary patiently and asked these two questions:

“Gary, you’re intelligent, aren’t you?”

Gary nodded.

“Well, you can retrain in areas that can’t be taken up by technology and AI. You agree, don’t you?

Gary nodded, silent and pondering.

Secondly, as you might recognise, Claire had already applied these questions to herself, with positive responses.

Claire is more attitudinally competent than Gary.

Attitudinal Competence is your skill in being able to rapidly adopt and adapt your best attitude towards anything and everything, without being stuck with habitual attitudes that don’t help you.

This means you have improved self and situation awareness, positivity, adaptability and resilience.

More importantly, it means you can generate rapidly your most beneficial feelings, regardless of what is happening.

Your feelings most often dictate your responses, don’t they?

The ability to rapidly alter your feelings or emotions is directly tied to your ability to choose better thoughts.

It’s not our situations that cause us stress, it’s our thoughts about that situation that cause the stress.

Attitudinal Competence skills you to rapidly make better choices in your thoughts and feelings, which then directly impact your responses and outcomes.

In today’s turbulent world, made more uncertain with a potential pandemic looming, attitudinal competence can mean the difference between an effective response and an ineffective response.

The good news is that it’s not rocket science.
